It's spooky season and we are all about having fun with the kids for Halloween with easy crafts you can do at home for spooktacular fun. The kids will love to create their own decorations for the house, a Halloween block party with neighbors, or just to have a fun afternoon at home.
I came up with two easy and creative crafts for one of our past segments with Alex Worstell on Good Day Acadiana using simple art supplies, a few print-outs and a simple items from around the house and/or yard. Check out a clip from the show below:
Egg Carton Halloween Monsters
I originally saw the craft on The Best Ideas for Kids and decided to put my own Macaroni KID twist on them. Here's what you will need:
- Empty egg carton
- Paint and brushers
- Markers
- Scissors
- Hot glue and/or Elmer's glue
- Sticks/twigs from around the yard
- Pipe cleaners, old buttons, macaroni noodles, or other small items from around the house
Step-by-Step Instructions:
First, begin with cutting apart your egg carton. Cut out the entire egg shape free from the carton so you have 12 or 18 loose items to use. Next, decide what Halloween character you want to make. You can create all of the same kind, or make a bunch of different monsters to complete your display.
Now, begin to paint your loose egg carton shapes. You can do one, two or three levels for your Halloween monsters. We did three for most of ours. If you are making a two or three tiered Halloween monster, I recommend painting all of your egg cartons at once and letting them dry before adding any other decorative items.
While your egg carton shells are drying, decide what other items you want to add to your creation. We used twigs from around the yard to make a witch's broom, a macaroni noodle for a nose, and buttons to give our monsters some character. Once your egg carton shells are dry, begin to stack them on top of each other or you can also use glue to hold them in place.
Get creative and add other items to create a cape for Dracula, a broom for your witch, or a stem for your pumpkins. The best part is this craft is adaptable for children of all ages. For the littles, they can paint one tiered egg carton shells and make cute pumpkins or ghosts.
🍂 Planning family weekends just got easier. We find the events, you make the memories. 🍂
That’s what we call a parenting win!
Spell Jars for Your Halloween Décor
Creating these spell jars will add a personal touch to your Halloween decorations around the house. The kids will enjoy coming up with kooky names for the spell jars as well as painting and decorating them.
Supplies You'll Need:
- Empty, cleaned jar or bottles
- Paint and brushes
- Hot glue and/or Modge Podge
- Print-outs, labels or hand-drawn images that can be cut out
- Glitter, sequins, or other small items from around the house
Step-by-Step Instructions:
First, make sure your spell jars are cleaned and thoroughly dry. You can use any size jar you prefer like an old condiment jar of jelly or mayonnaise. We soaked our jars overnight to remove old glue and paper. Next, decide what your spell jar will be. We had fun with this and came up with a few names like Toad Nails, Spider Eyes, and Werewolf Fur for our labels.

If you are going to add a paper label, you will want to Modge Podge the label on your jar before you decorate it. For your labels, you can create them online using a graphic design tool or find images already made and print them out. If you would like to use the labels we made for our jars, you can print them out by clicking here. You can also just write the names of your spells on piece of construction paper and glue that to your jar.
Once your labels are dry and glued to your jar, you can now begin to decorate with paint, glitter, or other items you have. We used a few items like grass, google eyes, and small seashells to fill up our jars.
