Summer is here and that means parents are on the hunt for free or low-cost events and activities for their kids to make the most out of summer break. Local churches and other community organizations will be hosting VBS (Vacation Bible School) events and we have the list here to help busy parents plan out a few days of summer fun.
My children loved attending VBS when they were younger. I can still hear them singing the VBS theme songs in my head now! Most VBS events are geared to younger children in elementary school. However, older children can sometimes volunteer to help lead events and activities, so be sure to ask your local churches about volunteering.
These events allow the kids to enjoy a couple of hours during the day or evening to make friends with other children, enjoy crafts and games, and learn about bible stories in a fun and engaging way. Parents get a break to run errands or simply can plan for some quiet time while kiddos are soaking in the VBS summer fun. Most churches and organizations offer their VBS summer camps at no charge. Some do have a nominal fee, but check with the church office on scholarship availability.
Each VBS has its own unique theme—think jungle adventures, space missions, or treasure hunts—that brings the Bible to life in creative ways. Most programs run for a few hours each morning or evening, making it a perfect break for both kids and parents during the summer months. Whether you're looking to keep your child active, connect with the community, or explore a church for the first time, VBS is a wonderful way to do it.
