5 Things You Should Know Before Making New Year's Resolutions

The truth about making new year's resolutions for the upcoming new year

By Tracie Ysaguire, Publisher for Macaroni KID New Iberia December 31, 2021

Here we are! We've made another trip around the sun and everyone is solemnly swearing to make this year, the year they get it right. Resolving to lose that extra 20 pounds, workout more, or finally get your life in order and get organized.

Want to know the truth? If you haven't made any of these changes or resolutions happen in the last 365 days, the odds are you will struggle to make them happen this year as well.

While that may sound brutal, the truth is when we focus more on the negative things around us, we seem to bring them into our life even more.

For example, if you are trying to cut back on sweets, you may be craving a donut and you keep telling yourself "Don't eat the donut"  but in reality, all you're focusing on is, guess what? The donut.

In my opinion, when we make these new year's resolutions, they tend to make us focus more on the negative things that are in our lives. So before you get busy making your list this year, let me share five things you should know before making new year's resolutions:

Let go of being "perfect"

We put a lot of pressure on ourselves to be perfect, mostly because we are trying to be perfect from someone else's perspective. Perfectionism is a disease and it doesn't have room in any of our lives. It's okay to be messy, a little crazy, and somewhat unorganized. The most important thing is that you be authentic. Some one loves you just as you are. I promise.

Your resolutions need to ebb and flow

You can make a list of resolutions any time of the year. Instead of coming up with a half-hearted list of things to change just because it's January 1st, take all the time you need to dig in and get to know yourself a little better. Spend some time thinking about what makes you tick, what brings joy to your life. Is it painting? Well, then do more of that this year.

Awareness is key

To bring change, we must have awareness. If you are aware of the things that you may need to change or remove from your life, then you've made a huge step already. Pat yourself on the back for that.

Mental health breaks are important for everyone

Implement your own version of taking breaks this year to renew your energy. Finding ways to support our own mental health is important for each of us, especially as parents. Over the last couple of years, there have been major changes that affect how we communicate with each other, how we travel and interact with family and friends, and even how we work. Be sure you are taking time for yourself regularly to release stress, renew your creative energy, and stay in tune for yourself.

Shift your focus

Focus more on the things you want to bring into your life, rather than the ones you want to remove from it. When you shift your focus to the positive things you want to attract, that is naturally where your mind will go.
