Pass the Salt Please and Get Creative This Easter

Bring the Easter fun indoors with a Salt Art Easter Craft

By Tracie Ysaguire, Publisher for Macaroni KID New Iberia April 7, 2023

Easter is the time of year that many families look forward to as it brings gatherings with family and friends, Easter egg hunts, and lots of yummy goodies from chocolate to baked ham to pass along the table. This Easter ask someone to pass the salt so you can get creative by making Salt Art Easter Crafts with the kids.

We look forward to the events outdoors during the Easter season, but if bad weather decides to show up and cancel your outdoor Easter activities, then making crafts with your kids is always guarantee to bring a smile to their faces.

This is a easy, inexpensive craft you can do with items around the house. You can get as fancy as you want or keep it simple. It's totally up to you!

Here is what you will need:

  Table Salt

  School Glue

Hair dryer (not necessary, just to speed up the process)

  Watercolor paint and brushes

  Cup of water

Blank paper, cardstock paper, or other decorative paper (You can also use a poster board and cut up into sections to make more than one creative piece of art!)

Easter coloring books or printable Easter color pages

Tray or pan to catch the salt

Paper towels and clean up wipes

Instructions:

Create your Salt Art Easter picture by drawing it on your blank paper with your glue. You can draw free hand an Easter egg, a bunny, or another one of your favorite Easter symbols. If you are not sure what to draw then place an image from a coloring page or printable under your blank paper and outline it with your glue.

Next, take your Easter image you just traced in the glue and place it in a tray. Generously sprinkle your salt all over the image while it is in the tray. Shake off excess salt into the tray and let your image dry. You can use a blow dryer to speed it up, you can let it dry overnight, or just wait a few minutes. We created images both ways and found the longer it dries the better your image will come out in the end.

While your art is drying, set up your watercolor paints, a cup of water, paint brushes, clean up supplies. If you get watercolor in a tube from a local craft store, you can create different shades of color to use. You can also just use the kids water color paints that come in a flat, plastic tray that can be found in dollar stores everywhere.

Once your salt art creation is dry, simply dab your paint brush in the water and then into your water color paint and dab it on your salt art. Then, watch the magic happen!

There is no need to paint or swipe your brush. The watercolor paint will simply absorb itself into the salt. Do this all over your art creation. This is where you get creative!

Once you have added the color all over your art creation, let your art dry. It is best to dry over night but again you can use a hair dryer to speed up the process.
