Love the Boot, a non-profit organization in Louisiana, celebrates Earth Day and Louisiana all week from April 20 through April 28, 2024. During this week, there will be events planned around the state in honor of Earth Day that allows all residents to participate in giving back. We have several events happening around our area throughout Iberia Parish, St. Martin Parish, St. Mary Parish, and Vermilion Parish.

If anything, the most important thing you can do to celebrate Earth Day is to simply say thank you to Mother Earth. You can also lead the charge to volunteer with a local organization, organize a clean up at your favorite park or playground, or just enjoy a day in the park with your kids! Here are a few of the local parks in our area where you can celebrate Earth Day:

New Iberia City Park, New Iberia

  Cypremort Point, Franklin

  Palmetto State Park, Abbeville

Parc des Ponts Breaux, Breaux Bridge

Lake Fausse Pointe State Park, St. Martinville

We tend to take Mother Earth for granted. By showing appreciation for all the beauty that surrounds us we are teaching an important lesson to the next generation.

Looking to get more involved than just a day at the park? Here is a quick list of ideas for you to celebrate Earth Day this year:

Pick up the trash in your neighborhood

Enjoy a bike ride through town with the kids

Clean up your garden and plant something new

Create a birdhouse or birdbath for your yard

Organize a beach or bayou clean up

12 More Ideas for Your Family to Celebrate this Earth Day

You can celebrate Earth Day every day by doing a few things that may seem easy for you and your family, but they can have a big impact when we all follow these good Earth-friendly practices. Here are 12 ideas from Macaroni KID for you and your family to celebrate Earth Day every day.

At home:

  • Buy dry goods in bulk, since they typically use less packaging.
  • Start seeds and map out a family garden, or sign up for a CSA to cut down on the carbon footprint of your grocery bill.

  • Work on ways to reduce food waste, including meal planning, storing items properly, finding new ways to use leftovers, and preserving food you can’t use fast enough by freezing, canning, or dehydrating.
  • Turn off lights when you leave a room and shut off the water when you’re not using it.

Outside:

  • Take a hike and enjoy being in nature. Bring a pair of gloves and a bag so you can pick up any trash you find along the way.
  • Start a compost bin to use in your garden and flowerbeds.
  • Make or buy a rain barrel and use the water you collect to water your plants.
  • Learn about invasive species in your area and what you can do to help.

At school:

  • Find out what your school currently recycles and if there is anything else you can add.
  • Talk with your school about alternative recycling programs that accept snack bar wrappers, juice pouches, and even offer fundraising options.
