We are in the heat of summer now with HOT being the key word in New Iberia, especially the over last couple of weeks.
For me, this month brings to mind the "oohs" of watching the fireworks with the kids, the long summer days by the pool, and dinners from the backyard grill several times a week. But there are plenty of other holidays and celebrations happening this month for us to acknowledge. Here are 10 events and holidays you can celebrate with your kids with fun activities and recipes this July:

National Ice Cream Month
July
Because just one day won't do, July is National Ice Cream Month. We think a scoop a day is the only way to celebrate!
Mix in your favorite toppings to your favorite ice cream at home for a treat, or support one of our locally owned shops and restaurants from New Iberia to Morgan City! We have plenty to help fill the ice cream void this summer.

National Parks and Recreation Month
July
Get outside and explore some parks new to you this month! We have plenty of parks in Vermilion, St. Mary, St. Martin, and Iberia parishes just waiting to help your family enjoy a fun day together. Plan a picnic with friends and family, a friendly game of tag, or throw together an impromptu baseball game. Maybe you'll find a new favorite family spot for hiking and playing!

Independence Day
July 4
Picnics, parades, fireworks and more! Independence Day is one of the favorite summer holidays for families in New Iberia. We have all the events happening this week from Morgan City to New Iberia on our event calendar and in our 4th of July Guide.

Macaroni Day
July 7
We're ready for all the pasta-bilities: elbow, bowtie, or rigatoni! Macaroni Day is a holiday we love here at Macaroni KID New Iberia!
There is also another pasta day to celebrate in July! National Macaroni and Cheese Day is also this month on July 14 making July the month to celebrate with macaroni noodle crafts or by cooking up favorite yummy mac and cheese recipes from Macaroni KID EATS!

Shark Awareness Day
July 14
Educate yourself and your children on the life of sharks. Here are some shark facts to amaze your kids:
- There are more than 500 species of sharks
- You're more likely to be killed by a falling coconut than by a shark attack
- 100 million sharks are killed each year by humans
How can your family help sharks? Learn about sharks and how important they are at the Shark Trust website. And of course every summer the entertaining, fascinating and educational programming of Shark Week on Discovery happens every July and will begin this year on July 7.

National Hot Dog Day
July 17
Hot dog, hot dog, hot diggity dog! Not only do we have National Hot Dog Day happening this month, which is celebrated on the third Wednesday every July. But we also have National Chili Dog Day happening on July 25 and the entire month of July is celebrated as National Hot Dog Month.
Hot dogs are an American summertime staple for families in Acadiana. This is the perfect month to fire up the grill and put out all the fixings for a hot dog bar. How creative can your family be with your hotdog?

National Sour Candy Day
July 18
I think we all have our favorites! Growing up in the 80s, sour candy was one of the best treats a kid could enjoy. From Nerds to Now-and-laters, sour candies fed a generation of kids who more than likely still enjoy them as an adult.
Mix in all of your favorites in a bowl, add them to your ice cream or cupcakes, or make a date to share some of your childhood favorites with your kids to try. Finding retro candies to share with your kids is always a fun way to celebrate!

National Disability Independence Day
July 26
On this day we celebrate the Americans with Disabilities Act. The ADA works to ensure all people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. Find out more about this landmark legislation.
