From fireworks, to UFOS, to sharks ... we are deep into summer and enjoying every minute this July!

By Tracie Ysaguire, Publisher for Macaroni KID New Iberia July 1, 2023

We are in the heat of summer now with HOT being the key word for those of us in New Iberia, especially the over last couple of weeks. For me, this month brings to mind the "oohs" of watching the fireworks with the community, long summer days by the pool, and dinners from the backyard grill almost every night of the week! But there are plenty of other holidays and celebrations happening this month.

Here are 10 events and holidays you and your family will want to recognize this July:

National Ice Cream Month

July 1-30

Because just one day won't do, July is ice cream MONTH. We think a scoop a day is the only way to celebrate. And of course we have to celebrate by supporting the businesses in Acadiana with the best creations of ice cream and other cool treats!

Macaroni KID New Iberia is in the process of creating a fun summertime community guide for our readers to find all the best spots for a cool treat to celebrate this summer. Our guide will be featured during the month of July and August on our website, social media channels, and weekly newsletters. It will also be highlighted as our feature guide during our bi-weekly appearances on the News 15 Morning Show, putting your business and brand in front of thousands of readers and local Acadiana families.

If you are a businesses in New Iberia, Franklin, Breaux Bridge, and Abbeville that would like to be featured in our guide to be released later this month, please fill out this request link here.

International Joke Day

July 1

They say laughter is the best medicine so why not start off this July with some good laughs. As a kid I remember reading Highlights Magazine strictly for the jokes. Check out some of these jokes that you can share with your kids for a good laugh on Highlights Kids

World UFO Day

July 2

While we are outside celebrating with picnics and games in our local parks this month, why not make plans for a nighttime campout to watch the skies! UFO sightings have become more common in the years since Roswell, New Mexico became a commonly known city for the famous sightings. If you decide to plan a nighttime campout and you see something in the skies over New Iberia, be sure to submit your report to the National UFO Reporting Center.

If nighttime campouts are not your thing, then have a UFO movie fest with the kids, create some UFO themed artwork or crafts, or check out some books at one of our local libraries. And if your kids are into learning more about space, then head them over to the NASA Kids' Club.

Teddy Bear Picnic Day

July 10

This holiday came about because of a children's song from 1907 called the "Teddy's Bear Picnic." (Listen to it performed in 1932 by Henry Hall & His Orchestra below.) Round up the kids and their favorite stuffies to celebrate with a picnic! Perhaps the menu calls for peanut butter and honey sandwiches, with gummy bears for dessert.

Shark Awareness Day

July 14

Here are some shark facts to amaze your kids:

  • There are more than 500 species of sharks
  • You're more likely to be killed by a falling coconut than by a shark attack
  • 100 million sharks are killed each year by humans

How can your family help sharks? Learn about sharks and how important they are at the Shark Trust website. There's even a quiz to find out what kind of shark you are!

And of course every summer the entertaining, fascinating and educational programming of Shark Week on Discovery happens every July! Check out the info from the previous link for the upcoming programming this month for all your shark fun.

Hot dog, hot dog, hot diggity dog. Not only do we have National Hot Dog Day happening this month, but we also have National Chili Dog Day happening on July 27 and the entire month of July is celebrated as National Hot Dog Month. Hot dogs during the summer months are simply an American summertime staple. This is the perfect month to fire up the grill and put out all the fixings for a hot dog bar. On this day we celebrate the Americans with Disabilities Act. The ADA works to ensure all people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. Find out more about this landmark legislation.

As parents, we are always looking for resources and support to help us with our children. Check out our article about disability awareness with a local Acadiana family from last year and get the links and information you need for support in the New Iberia area.
