Want to make this September extra special?

Here are 11 events and holidays to celebrate with your family this September!

By Tracie Ysaguire, Publisher for Macaroni KID New Iberia August 31, 2022

Welcome, September!

It's one of my favorite months: fall arrives, we have festivals in New Iberia and the surrounding areas, football and volleyball are back in full swing, the evenings are getting longer with the days beginning to get cooler. We can't forget to mention the corn mazes, pumpkin patches, and in much of the country the leaves will begin to change to the vibrant gold and red that for many symbolizes the arrival of fall. And did we mention — it's time for pumpkin spice everything?

Want to make September extra special? Here are 11 holidays and events your family can recognize during the month:

Labor Day

Sept. 5

Labor Day is the day Americans pay tribute to the contributions and achievements of our workers. Plus it's a great day for an end-of-summer BBQ.

Looking to get a taste of the fall festival season? Today is also the last day of the Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum Festival in Morgan City! Make plans to dance the day away with your family and friends!

Grandparents Day

 Sept. 11

Grandparents are special. If your children's grandparents are local, spend time showing them just how important they truly are to your family.

If they aren't local, plan ahead and send this cute handmade card and a hug! Simply tape together a few pieces of newspaper or use the white side of wrapping paper and outline your child with their arms outstretched. Let your kids color themselves in. Fold it up, put it in an envelope and send that hug to grandma! See more ideas on how to make Grandparents Day grand!

Hispanic Heritage Month

Sept. 15-Oct. 15

One of our former publishers shared this delicious Arroz con Leche recipe for Hispanic Heritage Month that she learned from her mother and grandmothers while growing up in Tepic, Nayarit. Make it this month as one way to celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of those whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

As residents of New Iberia, we know about our treasured Hispanic heritage in the founding of Nueva Iberia! The Running of the Bulls is happening this month on September 17th in downtown New Iberia at Bouligny Plaza. Make sure to sign up to get your run on and support the El Festival Español de Nueva Iberia!

American Business Women's Day

Sept. 22

As a woman, a mother, and a business woman, this day is one I definitely intend to celebrate! I love working with Macaroni KID and supporting our wonderful community of small businesses here in New Iberia. If you would like to work with Macaroni KID New Iberia to advertise your event, business or local organization, feel free to reach out to me at mackidnewiberia@macaronikid.com!

This is also a great time to pick up a copy of ParentPreneurs: A Decade of Deals From a Messy Minivan. The just-released book tells the story of how Jamie Ratner created the multimillion company CertifiKID and how CertifiKID acquired Macaroni KID during the pandemic, creating one of the largest parent-focused digital media and advertising companies in the country.

First Day of Fall

Sept. 22

Oh what fun it is to have a good game of tag football through a pile of autumn leaves! As summer slips away into fall and the days get shorter, we look forward to the cooler weather.

You can celebrate fall by finding the local fall happenings on our event calendar. You can also view our 2022 Fall Food and Music Guide for the details on the festivals in Iberia, St. Martin, St. Mary and Vermilion parishes!

We are hard at work behind the scenes now for our Halloween guide that comes out in October. If you would like to be a sponsor for our guide or advertise with us, now if the time to get your information in!

National Ghost Hunting Day

Sept. 24

We had a blast this summer ghost hunting with Louisiana Spirits around New Iberia! Read all about the equipment and process that is used during a paranormal investigation on Part One of our five part series New Iberia Haunts.

You can participate in your own hunts with team around the Acadiana area when they hold group classes. They have offered events and classes at Vermilionville, LARC, and The Sliman Theater this summer. Follow them on social to find out about their upcoming events.

Rosh Hashanah

Sept. 25-27

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year. This year it begins at sundown on Sept. 25. Many families celebrate with large family meals featuring traditional food such as challah and apples dipped in honey, representing the wish for a sweet, happy new year. Try this amazing recipe for Jewish Apple Cake, another popular recipe for Rosh Hashanah celebrations.

Good Neighbor Day

Sept. 28

We all need more good neighbors. How can you be a good neighbor? Here are three ideas: Invite neighbors to gather on the weekend to help a neighbor in need with yard work, start a neighborhood garden, or pool your tools for a neighborhood tool-sharing co-op.

Macaroni KID New Iberia loves sharing all the news, events, and

local celebrations to include all families in our area!

If your business or organization would like to be featured as part of a national day

or monthly holiday and advertise your services, let us know!

You can also submit your local free or low cost events for review directly on our events calendar.

Also, if our readers have celebrations in your family for the upcoming months that you would like to see featured, please email suggestions to us at mackidnewiberia@macaronikid.com. We'd love to hear from you!
