Macaroni KID New Iberia Recommends

Our Top Picks Happening In and Around New Iberia This Week

By by Tracie Ysaguire, Publisher for Macaroni KID New Iberia November 11, 2022

November is a time for giving thanks and showing gratitude. I am filled with both and want to start this week with a HUGE thank you to the New Iberia Fire Department

We had a bit of a scare last week when a fire unexpectedly started in a neighbor's backyard due to a transformer exploding. As residents of Louisiana, I am pretty sure most of us know the sound of a transformer exploding during a storm or hurricane.

Although I heard the explosion, I did not smell the burn of the fire that had started, but my dogs knew something was up. They were acting weird and were running in circles around the back door. I just assumed they wanted to go out as normal. But when I opened the door to let them out, I saw the high flames across my neighbor's fence getting dangerously close to the beautiful, old oak trees that tower over both of our homes. I called 911 and the fire department was here in a matter of what felt like seconds. They were able to get the fire under control and we avoided what could have been a major catastrophe.

As the daughter of a firefighter, I know all too well how demanding that job can be physically, emotionally, and mentally. I have nothing but respect for the firefighters and police officers who make the decision to serve and protect our citizens, sometimes missing out on important family events and holidays because of their decision to serve in our communities. When things like this happen, it surely puts life and all that comes with it, .... the good, the bad, and the ugly .... into perspective. I am thanking God that I was home when this happened and we were able to catch it in time.

But let us get on to the fun stuff! We have another busy week happening in and around New Iberia with one of my favorite vendor events happening Saturday in City Park. I love walking around the park and meeting all of the vendors and small businesses that participate, get some goodies, and do some early Christmas shopping.

We also are celebrating Veterans Day tomorrow and a few events are happening around the area. Most importantly, if you have a veteran in your life, be sure to give them a shout-out and thank them for their service.

I was happy to see that the City of New Iberia is going to be picking up all the trash cans that have been lining the city streets for the last two weeks since the switch over from Republic to Pelican. It was sort of disheartening to see all those cans around the neighborhoods, some still filled with trash. Thank you to the city for stepping up and removing the trash and cans that have been left on our streets. With that being said, be sure to read our article on recycling this week. I know it can be somewhat of a pain, but we as a society tend to throw away things that can be reused, donated, or refurbished simply because it is just easier to get rid of them than take the extra steps to recycle. The article gives you some great tips on ways you can start recycling as a family.
