Here are 10 Holidays and Events to Recognize This December

There are several meaningful days and fun holidays to recognize with your kids this month

Happy December! 

There are many wonderful ways to celebrate this month! It's about the holidays like Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa which bring family and friends together. But those aren't the only holidays happening this month! There are other meaningful and and a few fun days to bring awareness to this month as well. Some of which you've heard of, and some of which might be new to you. 

Here are ten holidays and events that your family can celebrate or learn more about this December.

Giving Tuesday 

Dec. 3

From Thanksgiving Day through early December, there are a  plethora of days to help holiday shoppers fill the wish lists for family and friends, like Cyber Monday and Black Friday. Giving Tuesday takes place the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving with a focus on donations to non-profits and community organizations. Whether you are donating time, talent or treasure, this is a day to embrace with your kids that will not only teach them about gratitude but also offer a chance for quality time. National Cookie Day  

Dec. 4

Saint Nicholas Day   

Dec. 6

St. Nicholas Day is celebrated widely across Europe, where it holds a special place in the hearts and cultures of many countries. From the Netherlands and Belgium, where children eagerly await Sinterklaas, to Germany and Austria with their Nikolaustag traditions of polished boots filled with treats, it's a beloved holiday observance. 

Want to take part? Let your children leave shoes or stockings out on the eve of St. Nicholas Day ... perhaps St. Nicholas himself will fill them with small gifts or sweets before morning!

Christmas Card Day   

Dec. 9

Spend the day making Christmas cards for family and friends. Whether you craft your own or by them, the heartfelt handwritten message will always go along way! Make sure to mail them just in time for Christmas!

National Twin Day   

Dec. 18 

How many twins do you know? Twins seem to be more frequent now than when I was a kid! As a mother of twin girls, my kids are usually never the only pair of twins in their school or at group activities. They keep me on the edge of my seat with double the trouble but offer double the love too. If you are a twin, then be sure to celebrate today! If you know twins, then make sure to give them a shout out today.

Winter Solstice 

Dec. 21

Need to explain the winter solstice to your kids? This is the day that has the shortest period of daylight of the year. In 2024 the winter solstice falls at exactly 4:47 p.m. EST. You can also use this time to teach your kids about other Winter Holidays and Traditions Around the World

Hanukkah   

Dec. 25 - Jan. 2

The eight-day Jewish celebration, often called the Festival of Lights, is celebrated with the lighting of the menorah, traditional foods, games, and gifts. We love these amazing sweet potato latkes. These will be the perfect hit at any holiday party.

Christmas Day

Dec. 25

Merry Christmas! Traditions for Christmas range from religious to secular and include gift exchanges, decorated Christmas trees and light displays, church services, visits with Santa, and meals with family and friends. No matter how you celebrate, may your day be merry and bright. Get your personal letter from Santa for your kids right here before the big day!

Kwanzaa

Dec. 26 - Jan. 1

This annual celebration was started in the U.S. as a way to honor African heritage in African-American culture. Kwanzaa has seven core principles: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. This is the perfect time of year to talk to your kids about how they incorporate those principles into their lives each day.

New Year's Eve

Dec. 31

Happy New Year! Have littles who won't be able to stay up until midnight? Celebrate with your own Noon Year's Eve celebration — they don't need to know it's a few hours early. Here are three ideas on how to throw an at-home New Year's Eve celebration kids will love!
