Macaroni KID New Iberia Recommends

Get details of local events and resources in and around New Iberia

One of the things I enjoy most with my teens is watching our favorite reality shows. We get so caught up in the drama, the characters, and the hype. We have detailed conversations and fun arguments about what happened that week, or what we think will happen in the upcoming episodes, or who the new villain is. Is anybody ready for an episode of The Real Housewives of New Iberia? I'd watch it!

Reality television has its good and bad points I feel like anything else. For many, it can be a much-needed distraction from real-life stresses that let you unwind a bit from the busy day. We make sure to have limits and/or boundaries when engaging in these television shows and of course always have a snack on hand ready to go! It's usually popcorn mixed with Sour Patch Kids, but there is so much more we can doth our popcorn toppings! To celebrate National Popcorn Day, we have a great list of topping ideas you can add to your bowl of popcorn as you cozy up for your favorite movies or programs.

Last week we listed some of the reading challenges and programs happening in our local libraries. This week we have another reading challenge you can do with your children and a great printable list of bookmarks to use while reading all those books! As Dr. Seuss says, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

One thing I remember as a child was Sunday dinners. It was a big deal, a family gathering that we did a couple of times a month at my aunt's or my grandparent's for Sunday dinner. We have tried to keep that tradition alive with our kids as well, making sure or at least trying to make sure that our Sundays include a solid family meal for us to sit together and enjoy. If you haven't ever tried to make a Mississippi Pot Roast, we have an amazing recipe you can try for the weekend.

And we officially kick off the Lunar New Year this weekend as the Year of the Rabbit. Get all the details below on this holiday and how you can educate and celebrate the Lunar New Year with your kids this week.

Now, on to our recommendations for your family fun this week:

Children were sent to every state in the continental United States. The one-hour multi-media program combines live music by Phillip Lancaster and Alison Moore, video montage with archival photographs and interviews of survivors, and a dramatic reading of the 2021 novel Riders on the Orphan Train by award-winning author Alison Moore.
