10 March Holidays, Events, and Observances You Won't Want To Miss

March is here and for many of us, it's a transition month from winter to spring. It marks the beginning of festival season in New Iberia and all of Acadiana, we get ready to change the clocks again with Daylight Savings Time this month, and welcome the new blooms of Spring. But the change of seasons isn't all that's happening in March. 

Here are 10 other holidays, events, and observances your family can celebrate or learn more about this March:

Read Across America Day

March 2 

Many schools celebrate Read Across America Day each year. You can celebrate at home too by visiting your local library or reading together as a family. Need some book suggestions? Check out these books suggested by the National Education Association, which celebrate an array of experiences and cultures.

World Teen Mental Health Day

March 2 

As a mother of teenagers I recognize the significance and importance of this day. This is a great reminder for us to regularly check-in with the teenagers in our life. Acknowledging this day allows to continue to raise awareness and support for our youth. 

Teens today have a plethora of battles ranging from depression to cyber-bullying. Here is an great article from Purdue University highlighting many of the battles our teens face and resources you can use to address them.

International Women's Day

March 8

International Women's Day is a global day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women while also marking a call to action for gender parity. Mark the day by celebrating women's achievements, raising awareness about women's equality, or fundraising for women-focused charities. March is also Women's History Month. 

Celebrate with the women of New Iberia this weekend! The Berry Queens of New Iberia is hosting the 2023 Hats 'n Hallelujah Brunch on Sunday, March 5 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Magnolia Square in downtown New Iberia. Seating is limited so be sure to get your tickets soon!

Holi 

March 8

Cue the Bollywood beat! Holi, also known as the Festival of Colors, is a religious holiday in the Hindu faith that celebrates the arrival of Spring. Activities of singing, chanting, dancing, and the throwing the beautiful powdered colors welcome Spring and honor the triumph of good over evil. Lafayette Holi celebrates the holiday event every year in Girard Park. If you plan on attending, make sure you wear old clothes and even bring an extra set to go home in!

Pi Day

March 14

Celebrate ... with pie, of course! We have more than 3.14 ideas on how to celebrate Pi Day, all of which are sure to add up to a totally happy family (see what we did there?) 

Did you know that New Iberia also has its own pi.. well a pie bar? Cane River Pecan Company opened The Pie Bar on Main Street and it is a great spot to grab coffee, dessert, lunch, or schedule a much needed date night. For the month of March, they will be offering a live concert series every Friday night so be sure to check our event calendar for the details.

National Children's Craft Day

March 14

Crafting is a great way for children to express their creativity and develop their own identity. Engaging regularly in crafts may allow younger children to develop their fine motor skills, and with older children, enhance critical thinking skills and reduce stress. 

March is also National Craft Month so if you are looking for crafting inspiration, I have listed a few of my favorite children's crafts below for some ideas.

Our calendar is continually updated with craft events at our local libraries. I love crafting to get my creativity flowing! I had so much fun last month on News 15 crafting with Alex Worstell for Mardi Gras making Shoebox Floats and then making Swear Jars to kick off Lent. It's not to late to Create Your Own Swear Jar This Lent with Your Family

St. Patrick's Day

March 17

It's time to make an elaborate leprechaun trap! Maybe this will be the year your kids catch hold of that little troublemaker. Looking for St. Patrick's Day crafts with kids? We've got green slime, modeling dough, and a trap: All kid-approved St. Patrick's Day fun! 

New Iberia is celebrating this weekend and next with The New Iberia Marching Men. The annual Turn the Fountain Green is happening on March 4 at 2:00 pm in front of City Hall. Then on March 12, The New Iberia Marching Men will parade down Main Street celebrating St. Patrick's Day and all things green. We also have Patty in the Parc happening this month in Downtown Lafayette. 



First Day of Spring

March 20

Oh, happy day. Watch the National Geographic video above to learn about equinoxes. Spring is a beautiful time to visit New Iberia and take in a festival or two, take a stroll under the beautiful oaks of City Park or down Main Street for some window shopping.

Ramadan

March 22 - April 21

Ramadan is observed worldwide as a month of prayer, reflection, community, and fasting from sunrise to sunset. Ramadan lasts about a month, from one sighting of the crescent moon to the next. National Mom and Pop Business Day 

March 29  

We love our local Mom and Pop businesses in New Iberia! Local, family-owned small businesses tend to be the backbone of rural towns and cities that keep the economy thriving. Today is a great day to say "Thank You"  and shop local. 

Macaroni KID New Iberia specializes in advertising for our local Mom and Pop businesses in New Iberia and Iberia Parish. The goal is keep our families in Iberia Parish shopping, celebrating, and enjoying all that we have to offer, as well as get more folks to come and visit us. We also work with businesses and organization in Abbeville, Breaux Bridge, Franklin, and Morgan City.
