We have another fun, holiday craft for the kids this week using simple items around the home. This is one of the more creative crafts that I know your kids will enjoy. We created our Elf Village with Alex Worstell on one of our past crafting segments on Good Day Acadiana. Check out one of our clips as we created our Elf Village with Alex last year:
Create Your Own Holiday Elf Village
My kids and I joke about saving items typical household items like empty bottles, boxes, and toilet paper rolls. Turns out I had a huge pile of toilet paper rolls and paper towels rolls in my stash. So I got to thinking, how could I use these in this week's craft? I came up with a very easy craft for kids of all ages to make this holiday season, an Elf Village.
Supplies You'll Need:
- Empty paper towel and/or toilet paper rolls
- Paint, brushes, and markers
- Hot glue and/or Elmer's glue
- Scissors and construction paper
- Styrofoam egg cartons, cut up into individual pieces
- Stickers, glitter, pom-poms, sequins, noodles, beans or other small items
Step-by-Step Instructions
First, take your cardboard rolls and cut them into different sizes. We did a total of four but you can make as many as you like.
Once you have them cut to your desired shape, take each and lay it on a piece of construction or other decorative paper to get it sized so you can cover the "building" with the construction paper. I have done a few crafts with these rolls and I found that if you paint directly on them, they tend not to hold their original shape. I had to put two rows of paper on some of my buildings as well.
As you wrap the paper around your "building" just add a little glue as you go along to hold it in place. Put that aside to dry.

Next, grab your construction paper and start making rooftops and trees. We just rolled the construction paper into cone shapes of different sizes. For the trees, you can make as many as you like and decorate them. For the rooftops, you will want to make sure the roof does not cover the entire building, so measure that out with the cut paper towel roll in your construction paper.
I also decided to use cut up egg carton pieces as rooftops on some of the buildings, adding a little cotton for a snowy roof. You could also do this with paint or pipe cleaners as well.
Once you have your rooftops cut out, you may need to add a little Elmer's glue or hot glue around the top of your cardboard roll to hold it in place. Now you can begin decorating your building and rooftops.
We use sequins, painted macaroni noodles for ornaments, stickers, and cotton. We added Christmas lights to some, painted vines on others, and made a wreath for the doors. This is truly a easy craft you can enjoy doing with the kids over holiday break, or to add to your own home decorations this season.
