March is here! It's usually all about the green crafts as we celebrate St. Patrick's Day, but this year Easter falls on the last Sunday of the month. That gives us a whole month to celebrate Easter and decorate with fun, children's crafts.
This week on our bi-weekly segment on Good Day Acadiana with Alex Worstell, we crafted these super easy Easter Egg Door Decor hangers on the show. Check out the post from our Macaroni KID New Iberia Facebook Page:
How to Make Your Own Easter Egg Door Decor
The most important thing you will need is a sturdy, cardboard box, similar to those that your kitchen appliances come in. The thicker the better! Check your attics, garages, or hit up your local supermarkets for some leftover boxes.
Other Supplies You'll Need:
- Crafting pom-poms, googly eyes, stickers, or glitter
- Scissors and crafting razor to cut out your shape
- Construction paper
- Paints, brushes, markers, and scissors
- Craft glue and/or hot glue
- Coffee filters
- String or yarn
- Noodles, beans or other small decorative items
Once you have your cardboard box, trace the shape of an egg on the side and cut it out with a crafting razor like the Exacto knife. You'll want it to be big enough to hang on a door. Since these are made of paper and other delicate items, they are best hung inside your home or if you have a screen door to protect it from the weather, you can hang it outside like we do! You can also hang them in a window.
Now that you have your egg cut out, it's time to begin crafting. Before you start to create your masterpiece, I suggest adding your piece of string or yarn to the back for the hook. Just add a healthy amount of hot glue and place your string in a loop and let dry.
With your string fastened tightly to the back, it's time to make magic! Alex decided to do a mix of paint, small decorative items, markers, stickers, and made a small bunny with scraps of leftover construction paper. The main item we used to make our Easter Egg Door Hanger stand out was coffee filters!
Now you can do this with the coffee filters one of two ways: paint or color your coffee filters and let it dry. But be prepared to get paint all over your hands if it's not dry enough as I did! The best way is to sort of scrunch up your filter like a flower and then hot glue it to your egg. Once its secure, your can paint the coffee filter, color it with markers, or add stickers.

The easiest shape for kids will be an Easter egg, but you can do plenty of other shapes: a bonnet or hat, a bunny, or a chick. Alex decided to go with our Easter egg cut out and it came out so good, she kept it for the News 15 office!
