Kids Will Love to Create this Flower Garden from Recycled Magazines

Teach your kids about environmental awareness and craft with recyclable items from around your home

By Tracie Ysaguire, Publisher for Macaroni KID New Iberia April 17, 2024

This week our bi-weekly segment on Good Day Acadiana with Alex Worstell combined environmental awareness and fun as we crafted a flower garden with recycled magazines. This craft can open up discussions with your kids about recycling, our environment, and what you can do as a family to help our planet.

How to Make A Recycled Magazine Flower Garden

The most important thing you will need for this craft is a small to medium size box and old magazines. For your box, it can be anything from an empty pop tart box, crackers, or even an empty cereal box. If you do not have magazines, you can always check our local libraries or your doctor's office for some.

Other Supplies You'll Need:

  • Scissors
  • Hot glue and/or crafting glue
  • Tape
  • Paint and paint brushes
  • Noodles, beans or other small decorative items

First, take your box and poke 4 to 6 holes on one of the longer sides with a pair of scissors or a crafting knife. Now paint your box or garden. We just went with a mix of several colors of green and painted the top of the box and all sides. You won't need to paint the bottom. Put your box to the side and let it dry completely.

Next, begin ripping out your magazine pages as evenly as possible. To make 4 to 6 flowers you will probably need about 20 to 25 pages. You will also need to use the cover and back of the magazine which are a little more sturdier than the pages for the base of the petals on your flower.

Take your individual pages from your magazine and begin to roll them as tightly as possible. Start at one corner and roll towards the upper corner on the other side. Add a small piece of tape or two on your rolled magazine papers. These will be the stem for your flowers.

Now, you will create your petals, top, and leaves for your flower. I recommend starting with the front and back covers of the magazine. Fold it in half and begin cutting wavy or petal shaped pieces from the covers along the sides. There really is no wrong way to do these cut outs, but the covers from the magazine will hold the other petals in place. Once you have these cut out, you can begin cutting out different shape and sizes from the other pieces of magazine paper.

You can begin gluing the petals on your flower starting with the cover pieces. You can use hot glue or crafting glue. Once your base is created begin to add the other petals around the flower. You can add as little or as many as you like. You can also use other crafting items like pom-poms and paint to make your flowers pop.

Once everything is dry on your flower, place it in your garden. You can also add other decorative items to your box to make yoru garden come to life.

Magazine Paper Bowls

We had so many magazines we decided to try this craft that I found on diy*joy too! You will also roll your pages from the magazines tightly and depending on how big you want your bowl to be, you may use 30 pages or more.

I will warn you.. your hands may cramp up but I did this with my teenage daughters and we had so much fun crafting these bowls. Watch the video below to find out how you can make these bowls with your kids too.
