Your Kids Will Have A DINO-MITE Time Crafting These Dinosaurs at Home!

Gather up some paint and a few other household items to create a DINO-MITE fun craft

By Tracie Ysaguire, Publisher for Macaroni KID New Iberia May 2, 2024

Earlier this week we announced our dino-mite giveaway for a family 4-pack of tickets to Jurassic Quest happening at the Cajundome in Lafayette later this month. So, with that I decided our crafting segment on Good Day Acadiana with Alex Worstell this week had to be all about the dinosaurs!

What I love about this craft is that there is no wrong way to make them! Also, this craft not only allows the kid's to open their imaginations and creativity but they can also learn about the types of dinosaurs that once existed, their habitats, and where they lived.

How to Make Your Own Dinosaur

The most important thing you will need for this craft is an imagination! But there are a few items that will also help your child create their dino-mite dinosaurs!

Other Supplies You'll Need:

  • Paper plates
  • Toilet paper or paper towel rolls
  • Hot glue and/or crafting glue
  • Scissors
  • Cardstock paper or construction paper
  • Paint and paint brushes
  • Noodles, beans or other small decorative items

My teens usually join in on my craft planning each week and the easiest of the dinosaurs we created was the blue Brontosaurus. We made this guy from the Styrofoam plates and toilet paper rolls. Choose your color and paint half of the paper plate on both sides. Let that dry.

Next, grab your toilet paper rolls and cut them in half evenly. Paint or draw on them as desired. Once they are completely dry, you will glue them to the side of your paper plate. Make sure to use the side that is indented where you would place your food. I found that it stands up easier using that side and gives your dinosaur the rounded shape.

Now that everything is dry, you can glue your dinosaur's legs to the plate. I like the crafting pom-poms so I used those for toes. For the head and tail, I used cardstock paper and simply traced out the head and tail. I painted them and added a googly eye and glued it to my paper plate! Of course, you can add other decorative items to your dinosaur as well, so be sure to let the kid's get creative!

One of my daughters commented how the ridge of the paper plate looked like a Triceratops so we decide to make a face with another plate. Again, this is all by imagination! But you could make these as a cute mask for the kids to play with at home too!

Once we crafted the Brontosaurus and Triceratops we decided to keep going. So we grabbed some more toilet paper rolls and got to work!

I have always been amazed by the Pterodactyl dinosaurs so I wanted to make one of those as well. We painted the rolls and cut out the wings, head, tail, and eyes from construction paper and then put him on a piece of ribbon.

We decided to also add some more Triceratops to our collection using a small piece of a paper plate, googly eyes, and more construction paper.

I bet your kid's will have plenty of fun crafting these guys at home! This is a great way to spend time with them or even help with learning more about the animals that once walked our planet.

I also found this amazing site for families who are interested in learning more about the dinosaurs. The Natural History Museum has a website that offers all types of information from an A to Z directory of names, pictures and stats on each dinosaur, and which prehistoric time frame they lived. You can use this site for inspiration to make your dinosaur craft with your kids!
