Do you have a child entering their senior year of high school or college this school year?
Last year my twins were seniors in high school and we were looking for a project we could do together over the summer. Senior year is an important time for our kids. Although they are not thinking about the memories they are making now, when they become adults, having a place to keep cherished mementos will be
I got the idea for a super easy, yet memorable craft idea we could make together. We created a Senior Memory Box for them to have a special place to save special items from their last year in high school.

Memory boxes make the perfect craft to do at home as we wrap up the summer and get ready for the kids to head back to school. This easy, inexpensive craft can be adapted for a child of any age to save the mementos they get from the upcoming school year.
We did this craft live in studio last year with Alex Worstell on Good Day Acadiana. Check out a clip from the show below:
Senior Memory Box Craft
We purchased photo storage boxes from a local craft store that were under $5.00 dollars. You can also use a empty shoe box, preferably one that does not have too much writing or designing on it. You will also need:
- Paint and paintbrushes
- Mod Podge and/or glue
- Markers
- Hot glue
- Construction or other decorative paper
- Stickers, pictures, and decorative items glitter, sequins, and beads
To get started, paint your boxes the desired color of your choice. You do not have to paint the entire box, and can just draw or color your designs as well. If you do paint the entire thing as we did, we had to let our boxes dry for about an hour before we were able to begin adding other items and designs to them.
Once your box is completely dry, you can begin to add other images to it. For example, if your child plays an instrument or is in the school band, you can draw musical instruments on your box. You can also print images form the internet to add if you have a younger child.
We added Mod Podge on our box to hold the pictures and other flat items in place. It's best to brush a coat over them as well. We used hot glue to hold some of the thicker and more bulkier decorations in place.
Each side of the box can represent their favorite activity, a specific memory, club association, or even their favorite cartoon character. Your child will love to create these boxes because it will represent them and their personal interests. They will have a keepsake to treasure with items that bring back fond memories of their childhood.
