Craft and Create Memories with Your Senior as They Head Back to School

Craft a senior memory box with your kids to celebrate the new school year

By Tracie Ysaguire, Publisher for Macaroni KID New Iberia July 25, 2024

Do you have a child entering their senior year this school year? I have two!

During my little summer hiatus from our bi-weekly crafting segments this July on Good Day Acadiana I got the idea for a super easy, yet memorable craft idea for this week. We created a Senior Memory Box with Alex Worstell

Check out our post the Macaroni KID New Iberia Facebook page to see what we did:

Memory boxes make the perfect craft to do at home as we wrap up the summer and get ready for the kids to head back to school. This craft can be adapted for a child of any age to save the mementos they get from the upcoming school year.

Senior Memory Box Craft

We purchased photo storage boxes from a local craft store that were under $5.00 dollars. You can also use a empty shoe box, preferably one that does not have too much writing or designing on it. You will also need:

  • Paint and paintbrushes
  • Mod Podge and/or glue
  • Markers
  • Hot glue
  • Construction or other decorative paper
  • Stickers, pictures, and decorative items glitter, sequins, and beads

To get started, paint your boxes the desired color of your choice. You do not have to paint the entire box, and can just draw or color your designs as well. If you do paint the entire thing as we did, we had to let our boxes dry for about an hour before we were able to begin adding other items and designs to them.

Once your box is completely dry, you can begin to add other images to it. For example, if your child plays an instrument or is in the school band, you can draw musical instruments on your box. You can also print images form the internet to add if you have a younger child.

You can watch a clip of one of our segments as Alex and I created her box in the studio:

We added Mod Podge on our box to hold the pictures and other flat items in place. It's best to brush a coat over them as well. We used hot glue to hold some of the thicker and more bulkier decorations in place.

Each side of the box can represent their favorite activity, a specific memory, club association, or even their favorite cartoon character. Your child will love to create these boxes because it will represent them and their personal interests. They will have a keepsake to treasure with items that bring back fond memories of their childhood.
