Get details on how your homeschooling family can become part of this program for Acadiana youth

As a homeschooling family, I have seen tremendous growth in parents choosing to homeschool throughout Acadiana. With my daughters entering their final year of high school, I hope to be able to share the tips, insight, and resources that worked for our family to help those who may may new or seeking information on homeschooling your child.

Last year, our family learned about the newly created AHSA Commandos Homeschool Volleyball team. Being avid volleyball lovers, we were so excited to have a volleyball team that was created to serve homeschooled children. With tryouts being held this past May and practices beginning shortly after, we have been working hard in the gym for the last few months.

The team was featured on a spotlight segment with Scott Brazda from News 15 earlier this year as practices began. Games officially kicked off in the first week of August and the kids are hoping to get support from the community at the home games this year.

The volleyball teams for the AHSA Commandos consist of a Junior Varsity Girls team, a Varsity Girls Team, as well as a Varsity Boys Team. All home games will be played at the Cajun Elite Volleyball Club in Lafayette. Both boys and girls teams will also travel throughout Louisiana playing other teams as well. We are excited to dive into our season this year which runs until October under ACEL, the Association of Christian Educators of Louisiana.

It is exciting to watch the formation of this newly formed team with the Commandos take place. All of the kids have been working hard this summer to learn new skills and techniques to play volleyball during this inaugural year.

Many families who choose to homeschool may join co-ops, other clubs, or programs to ensure their children can socialize and make friends while on the homeschooling journey. The AHSA Commandos is one of those groups in Acadiana offering several sports programs to local families. AHSA offers several other sports for students and their families to be a part of:

  • Cross Country
  • Soccer
  • Track & Field
  • Tennis

Participation in homeschool sports teams offers a fun and engaging outlet for children outside of academic studies. Children are offered opportunities to learn about teamwork, and camaraderie, and build lasting friendships. Homeschool sports teams offer a beneficial avenue for recreation, and physical well-being, as well as assist with overall development for children.

If you are new to homeschooling or if you are looking to get more information on how your family can be a part of a sports team in Acadiana, then make plans to attend the parent informational meeting with the AHSA Commandos this month.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Cypress Room at Girard Park in Lafayette. Parents are invited to meet with coaches, board members, and staff from the Acadiana Home School Athletics organization to learn about all the programs available for homeschooled youth in Acadiana.

The mission of AHSA as stated on their website is "to provide a constructive and positive sport’s opportunity for the educational, physical, spiritual, and social growth of home school students in the Acadiana area." As a Christian organization, their mission is to bring faith and fun to sports for homeschooled students in Acadiana.

If you can not attend the informational meeting next week, but would like more details on one of their programs, connect with them via email. You can also follow them on social media at Acadiana Home School Athletics for the latest updates.
