Fall arrives this month, bringing crisp air, shorter evenings, and the countdown to the holiday season. But that's not all that's happening this month! Here are eleven holidays and events that will fill your September with joy and meaningful connections:

Labor Day
Sept. 2

Bid farewell to summer in style with a Labor Day celebration, the day dedicated to honoring the contributions of hardworking Americans. Spend the day enjoying good company, delicious food, and toasting to a summer well spent.

If you are looking do to something fun to celebrate, make sure to get in the on the fun happening in Morgan City this Labor Day weekend. The Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum Festival is celebrating their 89th year on the Cajun Coast. Get all the details on our event calendar.

Self-Care Awareness Month 
All Month  

This is the month to carve out some time for yourself! Busy moms and dad often neglect simple things to take care of themselves. But being able to relax and embrace the act of self-care is not only going to make us better parents, but will also teach our children by example. Here are a few ideas to indulge in self-care: 

  • Plan a spa day
  • Join a local yoga or Pilates class
  • Plan a solo hike or day trip
  • Take an extra long bubble bath
  • Start a journaling practice

National Read a Book Day  
Sept. 6 

Whether you grab a new read or cozy up with your favorite novel, this is the day to celebrate our love of reading. This year the holiday falls on a Friday, so make plans for a good book night in! You can celebrate this day wit the whole family by reading a book together or joining a local book club at one of our libraries.

National Grandparents Day   
Sept. 8

Grandparents are special. They offer support for moms and dads and give our children unconditional love. We have a few ideas for some fun children's crafts you can do with the kids to tell grandma and grandpa just how much they mean to your family. And grab this free printable too!

National Kids Take Over the Kitchen Day    
Sept. 13

Parents, this is the day to take the night off in the kitchen and let the kids cook dinner! Depending on their age, you can let them take over the family meal planning today and cook their favorite meal. It can be something as simple as cereal, toast, or more complicated like lasagna. Either way, it can be a fun night at home to enjoy quality time with your family.

National Double Cheeseburger and Cheeseburger Day  
Sept. 15 and Sept. 18

Double up the meat and the cheese this September ... on your burger that is! Two days of cheeseburger celebrating is right up my alley. Cook up your best concoction at home or head out to one of the local eateries in New Iberia to get your cheeseburger fix. I wonder, who do you think has the the best cheeseburger in town?

Hispanic Heritage Month 
Sept. 15-Oct. 15

Taste the richness of culture with this delicious Arroz con Leche recipe recipe, handed down through generations. This month, honor the histories, traditions, and contributions of Hispanic communities from all backgrounds. 

We celebrate our Hispanic heritage in New Iberia every April during the New Iberia Spanish Heritage Festival. Founded in 1779, New Iberia embraces the Spanish culture and the history of our founding families.  

On Saturday, September 7, 2024, celebrate with the New Iberia community as they recognize the founding of our city. The Remembering Francisco Bouligny event will take place in downtown New Iberia at Bouligny Plaza from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.

National Dance Day  
Sept. 21

Grab the kids and break out in your best goofy dance, turn up the music and have a dance party in the living room, or put on your dancing shoes and make plans for a date night with your partner. Dancing is a great way for kids to get in physical movement, express creativity and it can help reduce stress and anxiety.

First Day of Fall 
Sept. 22

The Farmer's Almanac has a great article on the autumn equinox that offer some fun facts and insight into this special day. Get ready to welcome in shorter days and cooler temperatures as we officially move into fall. Although it takes a bit longer for the cooler temps to reach us in New Iberia, we are always ready to welcome the fall festival season in Acadiana.

National Seat Check Saturday  
Sept. 28

This month learn all about safety tips and best practices to keep our kids safe while traveling in your vehicles. This month we also recognize Child Passenger Safety Week from Sept. 15 - 21. You can also connect with Buckle Up Louisiana for more information and resources. 

On Saturday, September 21, 2024, join the Vermilion Club of Boys and Girls Acadiana and Buckle Up Louisiana for a free safety seat inspection in Abbeville.

National Ghost Hunting Day   
Sept. 28

Well, we can use this fun holiday as the official kick off for spooky season in October. You can make plans to get in on a ghost hunt or two as well.
