Welcome September! Celebrating fall fun from New Iberia to Morgan City

Here are 10 days to highlight on your calendar this month

By Tracie Ysaguire, Publisher for Macaroni KID New Iberia September 1, 2023

Welcome, September! It's one of my favorite months for a several reasons! Fall officially arrives toward the end of the month and everyone from Morgan City to New Iberia is desperately awaiting those cooler temps to arrive in our area this year.

The local fall music and food festival season kicks off and in New Iberia alone, there are two major festivals in September and October for locals to celebrate at, as well as plenty of live music events and local cook-offs to keep our weekends full.

Football and volleyball games are back in full swing for our local high schools, as well as our celebrated Louisiana teams like LSU, ULL, and of course we have our Sunday afternoon football parties to cheer on the New Orleans Saints. Our evenings slowly get longer as we watch the leaves begin to change to the vibrant gold and red that for many symbolizes the official arrival of fall.

Want to make September extra special? Here are 10 holidays and events your family can recognize this month!

Self Improvement Month

All month

This is the month for you to focus on you! As parents, being our best self truly means we can be the best for the ones we love.

Whether you choose to focus on mental or physical improvement, or a mix of both, this is the time to develop better habits. Start by joining a local gym, sign up for a pottery or art class, or get in on a yoga class or Zumba class at one of our local libraries. It's okay to love yourself and you will be better for it in the long run.

Labor Day

Sept. 4

Labor Day is the day Americans pay tribute to the contributions and achievements of our workers. Plus it's a great day for an end-of-summer BBQ.

Looking to get a taste of the fall festival season? Today is also the last day of the Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum Festival in Morgan City! Make plans to dance the day away with your family and friends to celebrate summer's end.

Cheese Pizza and Pepperoni Pizza Day

Sept. 5 and Sept. 20

What? Two days to celebrate pizza this month? Well, why not? Celebrate National Cheese Pizza Day first, and then a few weeks later mark National Pepperoni Pizza Day on your calendar. Celebrate by ordering your pizza from your favorite local restaurant or grill your pizza at home with the kids to celebrate.

Grandparents Day

Sept. 10

Grandparents are truly a special piece of our families. If your children's grandparents are local, make sure to celebrate the day showing them just how important they are to your family.

If they aren't local, plan ahead and send a cute handmade card that has a hug inside! Simply tape together a few pieces of newspaper or use the white side of wrapping paper and outline your child with their arms outstretched. Let your kids color themselves in. Fold it up, put it in an envelope and send that hug to grandma! See more ideas on how to make Grandparents Day grand.

Rosh Hashanah
September 15 - 17

Embrace the spirit of new beginnings with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. As the sun sets on September 15, gather around a table featuring cherished dishes like challah and honey-dipped apples, symbolizing hopes for sweetness in the coming year. Try this amazing recipe for Jewish Apple Cake, another popular recipe at Rosh Hashanah celebrations.

Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15 - October 15

As residents of New Iberia, we know about our treasured Hispanic heritage in the founding of Nueva Iberia! One way to celebrate this month is by creating the delicious Arroz con Leche recipe recipe, handed down through generations. This is the time to honor the histories, traditions, and contributions of Hispanic communities from all backgrounds.

National Family Day

September 25

This is the day to celebrate the ones you love! Families come in all shapes and sizes and we at Macaroni KID New Iberia are here to support all of them.

Make sure to plan a special outing or just enjoy a simple game night or movie night at home. In the famous words of Stitch from the movie Lilo and Stitch would say, “This is my family. I found it all on my own. It’s little, and broken, but still good. Yeah. Still good.”

Good Neighbor Day

September 28

We all need more good neighbors. How can you be a good neighbor? Here are three ideas: Invite neighbors to gather to help an elderly neighbor who may be in need with yard work, start a neighborhood garden, organize a neighborhood garage sale and donate the profits to a local charity, or pool your tools for a tool-sharing co-op and have a neighborhood clean up party.
