New Year's Day

January 1

Can you believe we are officially in 2024? Most look forward to the new year as a chance to make changes or do things they have been putting off. Many like to create a Vision Board to give the new year a spark of inspiration.

King's Day

January 6

If you are a New Iberia native, you know all about this holiday! However, King's Day or Twelveth Night as some locals may call it is the official start of the Mardi Gras season in Louisiana.

The holiday is also celebrated as well in other countries in Europe marking the day the Three Wise Men visited the newborn baby Jesus to pay him homage with gifts. For locals, we may celebrate by making our Christmas tree a Mardi Gras tree, doing parade planning for the upcoming season, and of course with plenty of king cakes!

National Dress Up Your Pet Day

January 14

You can make this a fun day for your kids and your fur babies! We have two fur babies and my kids love to dress them up. This would be a good day to find the perfect Mardi Gras costume for your fur babies as well!

Also, if you are a dog lover IPAC is always looking for volunteers to support the animals at the shelter. You can contact IPAC to volunteer for everything from dog walking to bottle feeding puppies.

MLK Day of Service is a great way to get out and give back in the community. Be sure to check our event calendar for local MLK celebrations happening this January.

National Hugging Day

January 21

Every one can always use a good hug! Hug your kids every chance you can get.. or if you have teens like me, I should say every chance they let us right? Don't ever take a hug from your loved ones for granted!

Kevin Zaborney invented this holiday in 1986 to encourage family and friends to hug more often. There are many actual health benefits to hugging, including that it releases oxytocin, a hormone associated with feelings of happiness.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day

January 27

On this annual day of commemoration, the United Nations urges all to honor the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of other victims of Nazism. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum offers excellent resources on learning more.

Invite the neighbors and make it a competition to see who can complete their puzzle the fastest!
