Vision Boards and Wishing Wands Are Perfect to Ring in the New Year

This powerful craft can teach kids of all ages to focus on bringing positivity to their life in 2024

By Tracie Ysaguire, Publisher for Macaroni KID New Iberia December 29, 2023

We wrapped up the 2023 year of crafting with Alex Worstell on News 15 Today this week. With the new year upon us, I wanted to do something fun that would encourage kids of all ages to ring in 2024 with a positive attitude.

I decided to make a Vision Board and Wishing Wand with old magazines and plenty of creative input. Check out the post from the Macaroni KID New Iberia page to see how they came out:

Vision Board

I began making Vision Boards with my kids when they were still in middle school. Now that they have moved into their high school years, it is something I look forward to doing with them every year.

Supplies You'll Need:

  • Poster board
  • Old Magazines
  • Paint, brushes, and markers
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Stickers, glitter, pom-poms, sequins, noodles, beans or other small decorative items

Step-by-Step Instructions

Creating a Vision Board is really unique to the individual and there really is not a wrong way to do it. This craft lets the creator do a deep dive into figuring out what they would like to see in their life for the upcoming new year. The only thing you really need is a good imagination, a creative spark, and a positive mindset to figure out what you would like to manifest for your self.

You can start by doing a brainstorming session and journaling what things, goals, or ideas you would like to work on for the new year. Then, dive in to your stack of magazines and start cutting out the images you connect with. If you do not have magazines, ask a neighbor, your pediatrician's or dentists office, or check at one of the local libraries to see if they have any they are getting rid of. You can also draw or paint on your Vision Board... it's really up to you!

While words like manifest are popular terms in our culture right now, the truth is if you are focusing on the good things you would like to see in your life, rather then the not so good, you will have more of an opportunity to create a life you are excited to wake up to each day.

If you can teach your kids that philosophy with a fun craft, it's a win/win in my book.

Wishing Wands

My kids are older and they understand the power behind creating a Vision Board. However, if you have younger children at home, you can get them involved on creating this goal setting craft too! Let them make a wishing wand!

Using the same concept as our Independence Day Rocket Craft from earlier this year, you can let them create a wand that will help them work on goal setting for their age.

Supplies You'll Need:

  • Popsicle sticks
  • Hot glue and/or Elmer's glue
  • Markers, paint, brushes
  • Straws
  • Old magazines
  • Poster board
  • Ribbon

Start by drawing a star on your poster board. You want it to be about the size of your hand. Cut it out an put it aside.

Then, take another piece of the poster board and trim it in a circular shape that is around the same size of your star. It can be a littler bigger or a little smaller, but either way you want to be able to see the five points of the star sticking out.

Paint or color your star and let it dry. Then, glue it to your circle. Let that dry. While that is drying, paint your popsicle sticks on both sides. Using about four five should be a good width. Let them dry.

While the sticks are drying you can help your child cut out things and search for images in the magazine. This is a great time to talk with them, age appropriate, about setting goals for the new year. For example, they may want to get a pet in the new year. This would be a great time to talk to them about the responsibility that comes along with that. Have your child cut out five images to put on each point of the star.

Now that you have your images and everything is dry, start putting your wand together. First glue your popsicle sticks together. Once they are dry, you will glue them to the back of the star. You can even add a small piece of cardboard from an old box to the back of the star before you add the sticks to make your wand a bit more sturdy. Hot glue works best.

Now, add your images to each point of the star, let that dry. Next, take two straws and glue them to the back of the star, on the popsicle sticks. You want to just glue the top quarter of the straws to the back so your child has enough room to hold the wand.

Now, cut five strips of ribbon and glue or tape those on the back of the star on each point. Your child's wishing wand will work like magic as the ribbons flow when they make their wish!
