By Tracie Ysaguire, Publisher for Macaroni KID New Iberia January 12, 2024

It's officially carnival season in New Iberia and I am ready for the parades, king cakes, and all the carnival fun with my family and friends! Since I was a kid growing up in New Orleans, I have always look forward to carnival time. It's usually one of the only times of the year I don't mind getting up super early and being out in the streets all day.

Our 2024 Mardi Gras Guide is ready for you to begin planning your carnival fun from New Iberia to Morgan City. We have links to events and parades that make it easy for you to find the ones that that fit your schedule. Please share this with your friends and family and make sure to tell them you heard about it from Macaroni KID New Iberia!

This Monday we are celebrating MLK Day and we have two articles this week that can help give your family insights on this day of honor for Martin Luther King, Jr. For younger children, we have a list of books you can select to teach them about this national icon and other civil rights leaders in 5 Kid Books About MLK Jr. & Other Civil Rights Heroes. With Black History Month beginning next month, these suggestions will be perfect for a trip to the library with your littles. Also, be sure to check out Honoring Martin Luther King Jr. With a Day of Service in New Iberia for ideas on how you can give back this MLK day or any time of the year.

Next week is also National Popcorn Day on January 19 and we have a list that will make your snack pop with seasoning and mix-in ideas. Let us know if you give any of them a try!

I also did my first craft for the new year on Good Day Acadiana with Alex Worstell this week. I am excited to continue this segment this year so if you have any suggestions or feedback for our crafts for 2024, please let me know! I decided to create a really simple craft that celebrates National Popcorn Day and carnival season all in one. Check out the replay on their YouTube channel.

Our crafts are always focused on using inexpensive items that you have at home and offer a chance for quality time with the kids. Check out the replay on the News 15 YouTube channel to find out how to make your own Mardi Gras Tree and King Cake Paper Plate with the kids. These simple, fun crafts for kids may come in handy with the severe cold weather that is headed our way next week.

Now, here are our top recommendations for your family this week:
