Well, I don't know about you, but I am done with the winter stuff in New Iberia! I don't think I have ever been so cold, and that's with heaters, blankets, and my sweats! It ended up being a couple of days of all of us being home so we cooked our favorite meals including chicken and sausage gumbo and a big pot of chili. Good thing too, because word on the street is we have another round of the cold temps headed to us this weekend.
We have our first Mardi Gras event happening in Vermilion parish this weekend with the annual chicken run and Main Street parade in Gueydan. This event takes on the traditional aspects of a Cajun Mardi Gras celebration and invites the community to participate. I have not heard any news of it being canceled or postponed but be sure to check before you head out the door. And if you are looking for other Mardi Gras events, be sure to check out our 2024 Mardi Gras Fun Guide and our event calendar for events, crafts, and other activities for your carnival fun.
With the weather being cold and brisk, many choose to stay inside and have a day cooking, playing games, or binging their favorite television shows and movies. If you enjoy crafting, then we have the details for you this week from our Mardi Gras Tree Craft we did on Good Day Acadiana last week with Alex Worstell. It makes inside time with the kids go by a little faster and gets the creativity flowing for your kids. We will be back on Good Day Acadiana on January 24, 2024 with another fun, inexpensive kid's craft to celebrate carnival season. Be sure to tune in!
If crafting is not your thing, but you would rather read a good book, you are in luck! Our local libraries are offering several programs and winter reading challenges this year to encourage local families to read. Check out New Year, New Book: Join the Reading Challenge with your Local Library for more information on the reading challenges that you and your family can participate in. We have two other articles this week that encourage reading for both parents and our littles this winter. Be sure to check out The Busy Parents' Guide to Reading More Books and 7 Books About Winter Younger Kids Will Love.
And of course, we know that getting our kids to eat healthier can sometimes be a battle. So, we may need to sneak a little wholesomeness into our family dinners. We have 10 creative ideas to get those greens on the table and into their tummies. I promise I won't say a thing.
If you do brave the cold temps, we have the list of our weekly recommendations for you ready for this week! Here are our top recommendations for your family:
